Dive Chamber Operator On-Call Hours Change
by Staff
Roi Namur, Kwajalein Atoll, RMI - (6 Feb 08)
Beginning February 12, 2008, Marine Department Divers will be staffed to operate the recompression chamber during normal business hours Tue - Sat 7:00am - 4:00pm and on-call during Small Boat Marina hours Sunday and Monday.
The notification process has not changed and will continue to be conducted per SPI 1340 Notification Procedures for Use of the Recompression Chamber. If the need arises to treat a patient outside of these hours, every effort will be made to support that need.
Please disseminate as necessary.
The following will be communicated via the Hourglass, KRS Newsline
and AFN Roller beginning this week:
-------------------
KRS maintains and operates a recompression chamber to support USAKA/RTS mission requirements. An additional benefit of this mission requirement is the availability of the chamber to recreational divers for the primary treatment of decompression sickness and scheduled hyperbaric oxygen wound treatment for hospital patients.
Since the beginning of the KRS contact in 2003, the chamber has been used to provide 22 treatments. Of these 22 instances; 7 treatments were provided to Kwajalein residents or visiting TDY personnel for suspected decompression sickness, 8 for suspected decompression sickness cases originating from other locations such as Bikini, Majuro, and 7 scheduled hyperbaric oxygen wound care treatments.
As part of the FY08 initiative to reduce costs and meet budget constraints, beginning February 12, 2008 KRS will be decreasing on-call hours for operators of the chamber. We have set the new on-call hours to cover the times when there would be the most number of active recreational divers. Operators for the chamber will be on call during Small Boat Marina hours on Sunday and Monday. If the need arises to treat a patient outside of these hours or normal working hours, every effort will be made to support that need. Since the beginning of the KRS contract, there has been only one incident of suspected decompression sickness involving a Kwajalein resident outside of the proposed coverage hours.
The Kwajalein dive community maintains an outstanding safety record
demonstrating the professionalism and quality of the dive programs on
Kwajalein. These new on-call hours will meet mission requirements while
still effectively supporting the recreational diving and medical communities.
